The Matrix and Buddhism

"Blue pill or the red pill?"
                                     The Matrix
The Matrix (1999) is a movie about a computer hacker named Neo who eventually discovers that his world is just a computer generated fantasy and the "real world" is full of chaos. With the help of Morpheus and the crew on the spaceship, they bring down the controllers of the fantasy world.
However there is a lot to be learned from the Matrix, such as life lessons and skills. The main important things are the lessons taught in Buddism.

All of his life, the Buddha had wondered why people suffer and the cause of suffering. It was because they had earthly attachments and desires on planet earth that they cannot let go of. The Buddha understood this, and had finally achieved enlightenment.

The Buddha had spent his whole life trying to steer people in the right direction, leading them to a new way of life. Morpheus had done the same for Neo, leading him into the man he was destined to be, The One.

Morpheus had believed that Neo was the chosen one, giving him a chance to feel and express a human emotion of attachment and duty. Being grown from a captsule, he didn't really get a chance to be human and grow as a self made man.

Meeting Neo was a blessing for Morpheus, because he did not only have a reason to sacrifice his life for Neo (because he strongly believes in Neo being the chosen one), and because everyone sees Morpheus as a father figure.

  1. I also believe Neo was the one all along, the only one holding him back from that was himself. I never really thought of Neo giving Morpheus the chance to feel human emotion of attachment and duty, but now that you mentioned it, it does make sense.

  4. See the movie doesn't say Neo is the one, we are all the one. We just have to believe we are the one.
