16. Freebie

A humans highest function is reason.

I for one, don't like to give up. Ever. There's this growing fire inside of me that makes me completely stubborn and irrational when I've done something that wasn't satisfactory to me.
Ex: mopping the floor at work. I do it until it's flawless, instead of half-assing the job.

The reason behind this is because I would never be satisfied with anything that I do if it wasn't done all the way.

It gets really irritating, but my family learns to live with it

Notable Star Trek Quotes

"You are fully capable of deciding your own destiny."

This quote has made me think about predetermined fate and whether or not humans are able to change their own fate. We all have power of becoming who ever we want to become, whether it may be good or bad.

"You were meant for something better."

Of course, I believe that everyone is born with a good heart, it just depends on the way a person was raised that changes their personality in the long run. Each individual has the potential to reach their greatest level of achievement, and possibly more.

"What is necessary is not unwise."

A lot of people tend to do things that make them seem cooler, better, or appear more closed minded because they want people to look at them as a "normal" person. However many people don't realize that probably doing the things that are out of the comfort zone and what others don't do is what's important.

"Act of faith"                                                                                            Source

This relates to a philosophical idea by Kierkegaard who believes with taking a leap of faith brings him a new sensitivity to the world around him.

"Put aside logic, do what feels right."

Also relating to taking a leap of faith, this quote refers to using your gut feeling to choose what you think is right for you.

The Matrix and Buddhism

"Blue pill or the red pill?"
                                     The Matrix
The Matrix (1999) is a movie about a computer hacker named Neo who eventually discovers that his world is just a computer generated fantasy and the "real world" is full of chaos. With the help of Morpheus and the crew on the spaceship, they bring down the controllers of the fantasy world.
However there is a lot to be learned from the Matrix, such as life lessons and skills. The main important things are the lessons taught in Buddism.

All of his life, the Buddha had wondered why people suffer and the cause of suffering. It was because they had earthly attachments and desires on planet earth that they cannot let go of. The Buddha understood this, and had finally achieved enlightenment.

The Buddha had spent his whole life trying to steer people in the right direction, leading them to a new way of life. Morpheus had done the same for Neo, leading him into the man he was destined to be, The One.

Morpheus had believed that Neo was the chosen one, giving him a chance to feel and express a human emotion of attachment and duty. Being grown from a captsule, he didn't really get a chance to be human and grow as a self made man.

Meeting Neo was a blessing for Morpheus, because he did not only have a reason to sacrifice his life for Neo (because he strongly believes in Neo being the chosen one), and because everyone sees Morpheus as a father figure.

Aristotle: friend as another self.

During my vacation in Las Vegas I had stayed with my cousin Dylan.

He knows me better than anyone. Whatever I'm thinking he can tell and whatever he's feeling I would know. We're like two peas in a pod.
                   Source: Me

This relates to Aristotle's belief that a friend is another self. We obviously wouldn't be friends with people that we don't like, and the people that we do like often reflect our own personalities.

He's basically the boy version of me, just smarter and more active.

The Lovers
There are many different types of relationships that we encounter throughout our lives. Some may change us for better, and some could possibly change us for the worse. People may have positive or negative relationships with siblings, relatives, friends, or even significant others. Rene Magritte’s “The Lovers” displays a painting of a man and a woman kissing. However they both have a veil covering their heads so that their lips will never physically meet.  Many wonder of the relationship between the two lovers, however I believe that they are hiding their feelings for each other.
Source
The veil they wear represents this barrier that most people put on themselves to protect themselves from heartbreak. It’s not healthy, because if you cannot open up yourself to someone then you most likely have shut yourself off from everyone else that potentially cares for you. This all relates to the Myth of Sisyphus.

He was a man who was punished for defying the gods. Everyday he had to carry a boulder up a mountain and have it roll back down to the bottom. At first, he hated the exercise. But as time rolled on he grew to accept it, and now he is content with carrying a giant boulder up a mountain.  The same applies to people who are to open up and accept the fact that maybe, just maybe someone really does want to know and understand you and how you truly are, then everything in life becomes beautiful.

Evlewt. The Truman Show and Philosophy

"We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented"
                                       - The Truman Show (1998)

While watching The Truman Show, the movie had opened my eyes when Truman was told that he was on a TV show. It made me think:

What if I have been living my life as blindly as Truman?
source

Throughout the film, we learn that our hero has been living life in this fantasy world and he accepts that it is real because it was the world given to him. It made me think that possibly, the people I know now are illusions I've created in my head. And the things that I think and feel are an illusion and nothing really matters.

Even if the world is just a manifestation of my thoughts, then I would rather not think about that and just life live happily until it is my turn to retire.
